Panic attacks… When to seek emergency treatment?

I’ve been having a lot of pretty bad panic attacks recently, so much so that they last between about 1 and half and 3 hours, or so Im told I dont actually remember. I never really truely calm down, as I’m shaking so much I tend to just were myself out and fall asleep/unconscious? I’m really beginning to wonder if it happens again whether i should get my friend to call for a medic to calm me down with something. I’ve been to my GP and I have a refferal to the hospital in a week but if I have an attack before then do you think it would be wise to seek medical attention?

for those asking, im 20 and im not on any meds. Ive had mental health issues for a while, including self harm. My last attack i had I spent hours panicking and fighting with my friend as I was trying desperatly to hurt myself…

You definitely should see a phycyatrist about that. I used to get frequent panic attacks but I started seeing a doctor, got on meds, and I’m fine now.

If you have another panic attack, do not go to the ER right then. All they will do is have you talk to a social worker, put you through procedural tests, and tel you that there is nothing they can do.

Next time try calling your health care provider and they will be able to find an available doctor close to you. However, therapists and psychiatrists book months and years in advance, so don’t expect to find something too close

    No you should not go to the emergency room for a panic attack. There is nothing they can do for you. You will sit there for 4 hours waiting for them to give you a valium and send you home with a $2,000 bill.

    I don’t think so. You might end up in the ER, where you’ll have to wait for a few hours and your attack will be over by then.
    Plus, you might be charged for the ambulance and ER visit.

    You should really see a doctor about this. They’re going to try to prescribe you preventatives such as Wellbutrin, but you should be very ademant with them that although you’re willing to try the preventatives, it takes about 2 weeks for them to respond, if they respond at all, and that you therefore need a fast-acting medication to get you by until then such as Xanax.

    I have been suffering from panic attacks for many years. They are under control because I take medication. You don’t say how old you are. Mine used to last 8 hrs. or more, and I’ve been hospitalized many times. Are you on meds? Yes, it would be very wise to seek med attention. It also may be a good idea to talk with a psycologist, because panic attacks are both medical and a brain thing. Take care of yourself. Panic attacks are misunderstood. Only people who suffer from them, and medical professionals understand how terrible they are. Good Luck, and see your doctor.

    Although you feel awful when you have a panic attack, it’s not something that is life-threatening. What they might do in an ED is give you anti-anxiety meds, and they may do that through an IV if you’re really bad. Your best bet is to get medication to control your anxiety before you get to this point, and often times that means an anti-depressant. Anti-anxiety meds have a relatively short action and their effect will wear off quickly, and they can become addictive. You may need an anti-depressant to get you stabilized. And, I don’t know if there is a situation in your life that causing stress or anxiety, but if so, it’s best to try to remove yourself from that if at all possible. Good luck.

    You should definatly seek medical attention next time this happens. When your body has a panic attack, it is basically saying "PSYKE!!" It has a huge jolt of addreniline with speeds up all bodilly responces and also makes you turn into an animal basically.
    YOu should remember everything when this happens as it also helps you think clearer. Since you cannot remeber and are possibly unconcious, it means:
    A) You are hyperventilating, which is dnagerous
    B)something happened in your brain to knock you out. Also really dangerous.

    Panic attacks are real and nothing to be ashamed of. I had them for 5 years before finding the right medicine. They are horrible, but you can be alright. See a doctor next time and best of luck to you! This WILL NOT LAST FOREVER!!

    When you have a panic attack it kicks your heart rate into overdrive as well as your mental functioning.     Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

    Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
    But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
    If you’re unable to take St John’s Wort, you can substitute it with Siberian Ginseng or Licorice Herb.

    The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
