I have panic disorder. It means i have lots of panic attacks over a long period of time. A couple of years ago i was having around 5 in one day.
My symptoms are,

Lightness in arms and legs, they go weak and shakey,
Rapid breathing or sometimes hyperventilating (a feeling i imagine like an asthma attack),
A very strange feeling that something real bad is going to happen but i don't know what,
Feeling of fear,
Dizzy,
Just a all over awful sensation that you are dying.

When i first had one i was scared so much i was just so relieved when it was over.
I went on anti depressants for 2 1/2 years and have just come off them. The anti depressants stopped me having panic attacks completely but they took a few weeks to start working.
While having an attack the best thing to do is go out into the fresh air and take deep breaths. Also telling myself that it is just a panic attack and i will be fine when it is over is the very best thing i have found to help, they normally subside when i think this.

The reason we have them is to do with the fight or flight response, it would take ages for me to explain it here so your best off looking it up on wikipedia.
Anxiety is totally different to a panic attack and not really as bad as it is a general daily feeling of being at unease with yourself.

Hope this helps x
References :
Sweating, a feeling of dread, hyperventilation, feeling of the room spinning , feeling nauseous, dizziness, pain in chest, gulping for air, feeling hot/ burning up inside, feeling extremely scared.

There is no known reason why some people suffer and others don't but it is a natural response to stressful situations. Your body releases a wave of adrenelin to prepare you for action. It is thought that this is left over from when we had to fight predators or run from them. It is nature's way of making us react to a dangerous situation. The problem arises when you start releasing this adreneline in situations that aren't neccessarily dangerous which in turn, can result in a panic attack.

Treatment is usually successful by using medication and/or therapy to retrain the brain into forming new habits and thought patterns . This is referred to as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
References :
Its because you have to much oxygen in your body,if you have them it can be treated.if you do have one then get a paper bag over nose and mouth breath into it for a few minutes this does work. good luck
