I just turned 30 and had my first full blown panic attack on mothers day! It started about 3 in the morning (weak ones) that would come and go every 15-45 minutes. I could not eat because I felt like I was going to choke when I tried to swallow. By 10 pm I could not catch my breath and my hands where stiff and curling up to fore arms. I also had tingle feelings from chest up. I had to cal 911 because I thought I was going to die in front of my children with no one else there. I have not seen my Dr. yet but will be soon. What are some natural ways to stop it from getting that bad? Is it normal to have panic attacks that come and go like that all day long? I wonder if this going to be a part of my life forever now and I am ashamed to talk about it with any one. like i am mentally ill now or some thing.

I get anxiety attacks/panic attacks that can last for hours. It’s nothing to be ashamed of – it’s a very scary thing!!!

Your Doctor can definately help – there is medication he or she can put you on to help you.

When you feel a panic attack coming on, there are a few things you can do that sometimes help me.

First off, spring up and walk fast. Doesnt matter where – just do something completely out of the ordinary. For instance, walk really fast to the kitchen and make some tea and some toast (even if you’re not hungry or thirsty) or walk really fast into the garden. (even at night – infact, it works better at night because it is very out of the ordinary to go into your yard at 3 in the morning! Great stuff!)

Also, make sure you have a paper bag handy. Cup the bag over your mouth tightly so no air can get in and out, and breathe into it. This will increase the amount of carbon dioxide you breathe in, and thus calm your body down during a panic attack, and sort your breathing out.

You get panic attacks do to the fight or flight thing. Your body tricks itself into thinking it is in danger, and so it prepares itself to either fight or run away. This can cause very strange symptoms, your Doctor will talk to you about this if you ask.

This is why I find RUNNING into my back garden helps, taking the paper bag with me and breathing into it when I’m in the garden.

I also find that getting some paper or something that I cdan destroy safely (ripping it up) really helps, giving short term relief during the panic attack. I crush rice cakes in my hands, biscuits would work too. Waste of food, but very funny when the attack is over and there’s crumbs all over the garden floor xD

Breathing into the paper bag is very important, as is getting yourself in a different setting and trying to relax. It is extremely hard sweetie, and at the time it will feel like it isn’t helping – but it will eventually.

Your Doctor can give you better advise about this =)

There is a definitive answer to solving panic attacks and anxiety once and for all. Everyone wants a quick, easy fix in the form of a small, easy-to-swallow pill. But, unfortunately, it’s usually not that simple.

I suggest checking this site out. See if you fit any of the criteria it describes (there are many different types of anxiety which bring about panic attacks, so it’s possible this may not be your particular cup of tea).

If you do, they offer therapy sessions on CD or tape. They’re really, really helpful too.

They are actually easy to manage once you learn a little bit a bout them, and if you practice a few techniques. The main thing to cast into stone in your brain is that panic attacks are harmless even though you feel like you are going to die. The panicky feelings are the natural effects of adrenalin, which increases your pulse, causes shallow and rapid breathing, dizziness and tingling from hyperventilation, nausea, and shaky, weak limbs. All of this seems scary when it is happening, but it is not actually a risk.

If you can accept this, it keeps anxiety from escalating into a viscous cycle where anxiety causes the release of adrenalin, which causes all the scary feelings and more anxiety, and then more adrenalin. You have accept the fact that once adrenalin is released, you will have those panic feelings for at least the next 10 minutes. When you begin to experience effects of adrenalin – look at it like you would if you were stung by – you are going to have uncomfortable feelings for the next few minutes, so just wait it out and don’t try to suppress the feelings.

There’s good advice at this link – it works pretty well if you practice the 8 steps described on the left side of the page:
