I have panic attacks and waves of emotions when i enter a church. what is this called and what causes it?

For as long as I can remember, going to church always scared me. I would get weak in the knees, hot, and panic would set it. Now that I am older and never go, I sometimes get waves of the feeling of hopelessness and calm, then start crying uncontrolably, when church is thought of or I hear religious songs (like holidays, on tv, etc) What is wrong with me?

You have panic attacks, it’s caused by anxiety, see your doctor and get some xanax.

You’ve worked yourself into a state of hysteria about church, that’s all. It’s not uncommon, though usually with schools or hospitals.

Don’t go if it bothers you

That used to happen to me, too. I believe it was because I didn’t know Jesus yet and had no intention of doing so at the time. There was that one time at church though that I just couldn’t shut the pastor out. God spoke to my heart, I bawled like a baby, and I accepted Jesus. Just before I did, when I was bawling, I knew it was because I’d been running from Him for so long, and I felt horrible about it. After I invited Jesus into my heart, I just felt immensely peaceful. Talk to a pastor about it or something. Better yet, talk to God directly. He’ll listen if you’re serious about it.

    It’s called "indoctrination".

You have forgotten that you are a lovely, beautiful, natural human being.

The church has gotten into your head. You need to forget all of the brainwashing.

The church is a dog. It should be taken to the UN as an example of torture and suffering and brainwashing . It is the biggest curse ever placed upon the human race.

116 Verily! Allah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners (in worship) with Him, but He forgives whom He wills sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, has indeed strayed far away.

    ch 19:

90 Whereby the heavens are almost torn, and the earth is split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins,
91 That they ascribe a son (or offspring or children) to the Most Gracious (Allah).
92 But it is not suitable for (the Majesty of) the Most Gracious (Allah) that He should beget a son (or offspring or children).
93 There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Most Gracious (Allah) as a slave.
94 Verily He knows each one of them, and has counted them a full counting.
95 And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection (without any helper, or protector or defender).

    Several things could be happening.

Perhaps you had a traumatic experience at some time which you have associated with church, church music, etc. This may have been when you were quite young and your sub-conscious mind is telling you to escape! I’ve seen this kind of thing happen in other situations, such as hospitals.

Or it could have happened that some unrelated event, like a death of a loved one which triggers these emotions because you equate church or religion with the panicky reminders of death.

Probably, though, you have some mixed feelings emotionally about your relationship with God, or with your own belief system. I would advise you to take some time to search your heart and mind about your own beliefs and feelings toward God. It might help you to write your feelings down, as if you are talking to God in a letter. No one else ever has to see it, the idea is for you to get the words out. You might be surprised at what you reveal to yourself! If it helps, you could say the words out loud, almost like you are praying, but it is just speaking out loud to God.

Try reading some New Testament scriptures from an easy to understand text, such as a New Living Translation, or some of the praise Psalms.

Then, if you would like, you might want to visit a small church on a day when there is no service and just sit in the pew for awhile. If this doesn’t bother you, you might be ready to try again if you like. Try slipping in to a back row, and be ready to step out again if panic hits you.

The main thing is not to worry so much about being in church, specifically, but examining your heart about what this all means to you and your belief. Please be aware that God is a God of love, like a loving father, who only wants what is best for you and for you to have joy and peace. He doesn’t want to scare you away, and He will be a gentleman about coming into your heart. He waits for you to invite Him and will not barge in unwelcomed.

Having said all this to you, I only have life experience of being from a long line of pastors in our family. I am not a counselor or a pastor myself, and don’t have any credentials except that I have seen so many reactions in my 50 years to religion/God/church. You may need to see a counselor if you are deeply trouble by this.

You do not say what church you attended. If it was of the "hell-fire & brimstone" variety, that would explain at least part of it. You would be afraid that going to church might put you on ‘display’, and force you to make at least an outward sign of ‘repentance’. Your panic and fear could also be caused by an inner conviction that you need God in your life, but your youthful experiences make you fearful of repeating the very things that caused your panic disorder in the first place. You need to know that all churches are not like that. In fact, there are more nondenominational churches who are concerned about your peace in God than about your fear of hell. Start by looking in the phone book or on the web for nondenominational churches. Then have meaningful conversations with the pastors and/or their wives about their church’s beliefs and the type of services they have available.
It took a long time (about 2-3 yrs.) for me to be able to attend church without having a panic attack. After I had gotten to know the pastor & one or two members, I just sat at the back, on an outside row so I could slip out quietly if I felt an attack coming on. Just about everyone I meet there was kind and understanding, & willing to help in any way I needed. Now I am able to sit where I want & enjoy the service, & almost never have an attack.
Once you take those first baby steps, you will be so glad you did! After all, once you no longer fear God, or His house, you have nothing left to fear at all!

    Love in Christ

In L. Ron Hubbard’s DIANETICS technology, the cause is is called an *ENGRAM.* This is a very wonderful doctrine that explains so much, and was L. Ron Hubbard’s only true breakthrough. he compared it to Mankind’s discovery of Fire. he was not exaggerating.

When the mind experiences what it decides is unbearable pain, emotional or bodily, it takes the memory of that incident and sequestrates it such that it can never be recalled by the conscious mind ever again, via the normal functioning of the mind. The experience is evaluated as life-threatening. Everything that can be associated with the experience- sights, sounds, smells, tastes, feelings, are labelled as BEING that experience, and life-threatening.
This is not a rational operation, but it is extremely thorough.

Charles (FIFTY YEARS IN THE CHURCH OF ROME) Chiniquy said that Roman Catholic Churches are constructed on psychological principles. The basic idea is that being inside one, you cannot doubt that THIS is "The House of God." Its construction is virtually unique.
There are lots of shiny metal objects, the light comes in throught stained-glass windows. Sounds echo sonourously. The choir sings in perfect harmony. No peasant would experience this anywhere else- except in the mansions of the rich and powerful. The respect for the one institution carries over onto the other, and feeds back- creating an unbreakable bondage. In this atmosphere, INFANTS ARE BAPTIZED.

To challenge the aristocracy is perceived as challenging God Himself. to challenge The Church is perceived as challenging The Law of the Land, and Natural Order. People who do so are rightly perceived as insane- because trying to break free of such oppression by force literally rips the conditioned mind apart, and only those of unusual willpower can even conceive of it.

On Islam: you may think you, a non-Muslim, can discuss rationally with a Muslim. You cannot. This is a guy, whose daily exercise consists of banging his head on the ground, five times a day, WITHOUT FAIL. You are an idiot if you think you can win a head-butt competition with a Muslim. He has been head-butting a PLANET since he was old enough to spell A-L-L-A-H. The concept of rational objection to his religion has been conditioned out in his childhood.
The truly inquisitive and reasoning minds among them have been subjected to, or forced to witness, so much terrifying punishment that their minds CANNOT THINK of rebellion without bringing up a countra-survival association. Any Muslim seriously considering leaving Islam is unafraid of pain and death.

This is just one example of what *engrams* can do.

The mind records everything that is going on with the body and mind during unbearable pain, and tags it as LIFE-THREATENING. Since one obviously survived the experience, the non-rational part of the mind concludes that the condition and operation of the body saved the life of the body and the sanity of the mind, SO IT TRIES TO RECREATE THEM AS A SOLUTION.

For instance, it often happens that a newborn would be born in dusty surroundings, and be obliged to inhale dust for one of its first breaths. Which is quite painful. In the future, the mind, detecting similar conditions of temperature, humidity, dustiness, aeration, crowdedness, wallpaper or paint colour, radio noise, outdoor traffic, or whatever, THEN CONCLUDES: *DANGER! DANGER! Dust strangulation imminent!* and decides, that the *Solution* is to CONSTRICT THE BRONCHIOLES.

Any sane person knows that inhaling dust is not all that serious. It is not the person’s sanity that is making these determinations! For no cause that these people can remember, their lungs seize up and try to strangle them!
This is the psychosomatic condition called "asthma."

A similar condition exists for you and churches.

The *Final Solution* to this and all engrammic problems is to bypass the mental blocks on the initiating traumatic memory, by a special technique of recall called "reliving." In this (wide-awake) state, one can slip past engram blocks to go through traumatic events again- but this time with one’s full rationality engaged. When one does this, the subconscious memory becomes a part of the conscious mind, and will never again be used to trigger abnormal reflexive psychosomatic reactions.

What probably happened in your case might be that you were taken into such a place as an infant, there were too many people, too many echoes, too much singing, too many shiny reflections, AND! it was TOO [*Bleep!*]ing COLD, and you freaked- who wouldn’t? You surely thought you were going to DIE right then!

When you remember the original incident, the engram will be eliminated. The trouble is, that you cannot initiate this process to take care of just the one problem. There can be hundreds of others, all of which must be "audited" out.

  22. Black Christian Scientologist says:

All Humans are born into one of four possible Life Energy classifications:

    REVELATION 22:11.

    11. "He that is UNJUST, let him be Unjust still:
and he which is FILTHY, let him be Filthy still:
and he that is RIGHTEOUS, let him be Righteous still:
and he that is HOLY, let him be Holy still."

(See also: THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER.)
Which classification we are in is determined by the mean of our parents’ Life Energies when they conceived us.

Possibly the most important Self-Help maneuver we can perform is to determine which classification our parents’ love or negligence got us into. If we are "low-energy," we must especially discipline ourselves to compensate. If we are high-energy, it is our duty to develop ourselves to serve and protect the weak.

It is difficult to change one’s default level positively or negatively- but it can be done. If one is high-energy, and allows oneself to come under stress, overindulges in recreational sex, malnourishes, poisons, or drugs oneself, pickles embalms oneself with industrial solvents masquerading as social recreational beverages, and fails to sleep sensibly- that can do it, all right.

If one drops far enough in Life Energy classification, a very interesting thing happens. All these *engrams* one picked up when younger, that belong to forgotten incidents and experiences, BECOME AVAILABLE FOR BUSINESS. This can happen any time in one’s lifetime!

Many more people have excuses for being asthmatic, for instance, than will ever manifest the condition. The reason being that the right (or, wrong) co-inciding circumstances of depression and environment have never been met. for those who are unlucky- they can be Olympic marathon medallists, and one day- *BOOM!* -they find they’re asthmatic! Discovering this is depressing in itself- so one gets no better- fast!

The only way to cure psychosomatic conditions permanently is to go into DIANETICS therapy, and painstakingly uncover the *engram* causing the condition. This can take the first week- or it can take nearly a whole year’s work. (Trying to attack *engrams* directly can be counter-productive. *Engrams* hide behind other *engrams.*)

When you are not trying to become the star of John Travolta’s PHENOMENON: 2, and just want rid of engrammic conditions, all you have to do is raise you emotional tone level! IF YOU CAN BECOME THE OPPOSITE OF DEPRESSED, YOUR ENGRAMS BECOME INACTIVE. Some SCIENTOLOGY breakaway organizations and schools do not care about eradicating engrams, but just making people cheerful, so that their engrams key-out.

The only disadvantage to this is that if anything happens to seriously depress you- mom dies, you gave away a winning lotto ticket for a cup of coffee, Obama makes president, or something- your *engrams* all line up, cracking their knuckles: "Did you miss us?"

The temporary solution to your problem is to treat your depression.
This can be done by "Giving your heart to Jesus Christ," getting prescription drugs, and such ill-advised chicaneries which The System has planned for just such a rabbit as you.

It is best that you study all you can about the Mind, so that you can make the best informed decision how to handle its fascinating problems, and not just throw yourselves into the arms of people who have practices hooking people with these sorts or problems.

while you’ve gotten the name of the phobia what causes it is entirely up to you and in your mind. that’s not a bad thing – it just is. i was getting panic attacks for a while fo NO reason – it was really scary. if it’s something you want to overcome you have to know it in your own mind that it’s a panic attack and nothing will really hurt you. something may have happened or maybe nothing happened so there is a void – you won’t really know unless you start delving into the fear. i overcame mine by getting pissed at myself! really i would be sitting there and KNOW it wasn’t a heartattack, i had this little breathing thing from one of the MANY doc’s i’d gone too and you tell myself to stop. it took a while but eventually — i succeeded! i still have the breathing think (perk o meter) and keep it handy "just in case" it’s my way of saying – see you CAN breath "dummy" now stop this.
