How come when i have panic attacks i’m not even panicking?

i think its a panic attack. my heartbeat is normal and then out of the blue it starts beating so fast it makes me light headed and my vision goes slightly. It feels like what i think a heart attack would feel like. It lasts a couple of minutes and then it will stop almost as suddenly as it started.

It’s hard to understand and explain how you feel to anyone when that happens. I know it’s very frightening. I experienced it after my husband died and couldn’t even walk across the road to post a letter without having an attack. I think something just clicks inside which makes you feel unsafe,insecure maybe. I did overcome it without medical help so i guess it’s all in the mind and if i can do it so can you xx

    Explain more… I don’t get it. You mean, it’s not clear why you’re getting a panic attack because you don’t know what’s making you panic?

    In my experience, panic attacks come during stressful times in general, but they don’t always immediately follow a stressor. Sometimes if your body’s overtaxed, the stress response is always active and you just have panic attacks.

    Anxiety disorders are just that – a dis-order. It would be normal to panic in a situation that causes fight or flight response. Having a panic attack with no explanation means you probably need to see your Dr. If it’s occurring frequently enough to interfere in your activities of daily living, he may want to prescribe an anti-anxiety med. I used to have those really bad but then I just grew out of em. Awful, arent they?Good luck!

    Because your thoughts are causing anxiety, but the panic attack stops you from thinking it through. Look into cognitive, behaviour therapy, and if your GP/therapist can’t refer you to anyone there are several self-help books available.

    this happened to me quite out of the blue. I saw a counselor and she said theres been some research that suggest that some people are vilnerable to a system wide panic ataqck without a psychological trigger. Theres nothing that you do to cause it. I ended up in the ER thinking I was on my deathbed with one of these "attacks" but my BP and breathing was normal, it was totally weird. The docs thought I was having a stroke at first. Anyway I can’t tell you exactly why but I can tell you that you are not alone

    Maybe its not a panic attack. You could be anemic(low iron)which also can cause sudden anxious feelings. I feel anxious before an allergic reaction. It very much feels like a panic attack, but an hour later my lips swell. A heart attack would feel like someone is sitting on your chest.

    If you are not feeling anxious/stressed/panicky when this happens, you could have abnormal heart rythms called arrythmia. These are slightly more dangerous than anxiety and usually need to be treated to prevent serious problems. I’d see your doc to get your heart evaluated. He’d probably start with a Holter monitor (kind of like a 24 hour EKG) and a stress test.

I had post natal depression and experienced this horrible frame of mind two weeks after my child was born and it is frightening? you maybe need treatment?SSRI’s or cognitive behevioural therapy.
